Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a method of natural healing based on the application of Universal Life Force Energy, that is, what makes us alive. (The name literally means Universal Life Force Energy, Rei meaning Universal – Ki meaning life force or energy.). Its goal is to balance and move around the ki or qi, (pronounced CHEE), the vital energy that keeps us alive and healthy. If the ki stops flowing, illness can result.
It has its origins in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which has been practiced for more than 5,000 years and is well-research as an effective means of maintaining health and healing if there is any disease present.
Reiki is a relatively new form of TCM which was discovered by a Japanese man, Dr. Mikao Usui in the mid 1800’s. He responded to a challenge from his university students by undertaking an extensive study of the healing phenomena of history’s greatest spiritual leaders. Through travel, study, research and meditation, he evolved a healing system based on ancient Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit. He spent the rest of his life practicing and teaching this method of natural healing, which involved attunement to the energy, and the laying on of hands.
Reiki is a simple and powerful system of lying on of hands and remote healing that can transform lives. The practitioner uses the Reiki energy to help people heal mind, body, soul; remove unbalanced energy, remove blocks, repair tears in the aura; and help restore overall well-being.
Utilizing energy is the key to physical vitality and spiritual evolution. We are surrounded by and are an intimate part of an infinite ocean of energy. This non-physical energy permeates all things, and all living things depend on it for their continued life and health.
Reiki will work for you personally and can be a door to a higher part of your own spiritual being. Reiki and other subtle healing energies are valuable tools for anyone whether they have health, emotional, mental, or spiritual issues or only want to empower their personal evolution.
Reiki is not affiliated with any one spiritual path and will work for anyone. Reiki energy works to harmonize, or bring into balance, the total you: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. You do have to actively use Reiki or get frequent treatments to receive its benefits.
Reiki treatment and practice can increase the flow of higher vibrations of energy through your aura and into the physical body. As such, Reiki is a form of strengthening and enhancing your energy and spirit, by which physical, mental and spiritual healing takes place.
The use of Reiki as a relaxation and stress reducing technique is becoming accepted and widespread. Many people like to get regular hands on Reiki treatments as a refreshing and relaxing treat for themselves, in the same way that they might get a massage or a facial, a guided visualization session or a mud bath.
It is now commonly practiced in hospitals and other modern health care facilities as a complementary treatment for a number of conditions. It activates the natural healing process inside the human body to restore emotional and physical well-being, as well as mental and spiritual health.
PRINCIPLES OF REIKI HEALING
Healing is not the popular conception of removal of symptoms. Healing is to recover a greater experience of unity with the divine harmony, and our true selves. Healing is returning to a state of alignment with your Higher Self or true way of being. It is western medical science that has made healing be thought of as the removal of symptoms.
The main point of Reiki is similar to ‘hands on healing’, though you don’t have to touch in order to heal. The theory is that a person’s palms can emit positive healing energy. The energy from the hands can boost energy; move it, or free trapped energy. The palms can also restore a person’s aura or energy field, improving the health of mind, body and spirit.
How It’s Done
In its simplest form using Reiki is simply the practitioner placing their hands on the recipient with the intent of bringing healing, and willing for Reiki energy to flow.
There is a set of hand positions traditionally taught which give good coverage over the recipients entire body. It is not necessary to follow those positions, they are merely taught as a starting position from which the practitioner can learn them. If there is a specific area of concern the practitioner can keep his/her hands right there for as long as necessary.
Reiki healing is very simply performed, and involves a Reiki practitioner either lightly touching or hovering their hands above their client’s body and allowing Reiki “energy” to flow to support the energy in each of the 14 primary meridians and 7 chakras that comprise our energy body. As such, Reiki is a form of strengthening and enhancing the energy and spirit, by which physical, mental and spiritual healing takes place.
Blocked energy that cannot move through the body is what causes illness within a body. We need to have an even flow of energy moving freely throughout the body to have health and well-being. The purpose of Reiki is to get your energy flowing by removing your energetic blocks.
Typical Reiki sessions last from 45 minutes to an hour. It will depend on your preference, what needs to be healed, how much time you have, and how much concentration you’re able to maintain. As with most journeys, there is a beginning, middle and end.
To the world of spirit there is no such thing as time or space. Reading Barbara Brennan’s books (Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field, Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field, Light Emerging: The Journey of Personal Healing and Light Emerging: The Journey of Personal Healing) one sees why. The world we see around us is only a small fragment or slice of all which exists. This small fragment is that which our physical bodies can detect and transmit or describe to our consciousness, or which we can construct machines to extend the senses of our physical bodies. There is more in existence than what our bodies can detect in this way (though with some training and practice one can extend the range of what our consciousness can perceive).
Since there is no time and space to limit spirit, Reiki can operate without regard to limitations of space (at least). A level II Reiki practitioner can bring healing to a recipient regardless of distance.
In doing remote healings the recipient is to be objectified somehow, and the symbol drawn in the vicinity of the object representing the recipient. By objectified I mean that it is easier for the conscious mind to deal with objects than abstract things. Therefore when doing a remote healing it is easier on the healer to visualize sending the energy to something specific.
There are many ways of visualizing or objectifying the recipient. For instance the healer might intend that their knee is the same as the intended recipient, which will create the necessary connection. Or they might draw in the air a shape to represent the recipient. Or use a teddy bear, pillow, or some other physical object as a stand in. The only limit is the healers imagination. For the healers intent is primary in bring forth the Reiki energy.
Advanced practitioners are able to give treatments without touching the recipient and they can send treatments great distances, even to people on other continents.
How Can Reiki Help?
We have so many demands on us every day; it’s easy to start feeling run down and out of balance. Reiki can boost your energy and then move it throughout your body to where you need it so you can maintain optimal health. This may sound weird, until we consider that a pacemaker uses energy, specifically, energy pulses, to help people who have issues with their heart.
None of us are at our best when we’re sick. When we’re stressed out, we can literally feel sick to our stomach. All of this can wear us down over time, affecting our spirit, that is, the essence of who we are as a person. If you feel as though you’re stuck in someone else’s life, it might be time to try Reiki.
The meridians are important in Japanese style Reiki because they are also believed to correspond with the major organs of the body. Reiki has the general goal of increasing, balancing and unblocking energy, but it can also go deeper to bring the organs back into balance.
For example, if your liver isn’t function properly, this can cause a range of health issues which will manifest in various ways, both physically and emotionally. A slow liver can make you very cranky and short-tempered. By contrast, an over-active liver can make you sad and prone to unexplained crying spells. Concentrating on the meridians that balance organs like the liver can restore health to body, mind and spirit.
Reiki is a form of healing using the energy within the body and is used to generally support a healthy lifestyle, or specifically for the purpose of trying to deal with a particular health condition. It is well-research as an effective meals of maintaining health and healing if there is any disease present. Studies have shown that Reiki offers multiple health benefits, including:
- Pain relief, even from chronic pain
- Lower blood pressure
- Better sleep
- Less stress
- Greater clarity of mind, and much more.

The connection between body, mind and spirit has been understood in the Far East for millennia, but this knowledge has only recently come to the West. Traditional forms of medicine such as the Ayurvedic (EYE-your-VEE-dik) from India, Qigong (CHEE-gung) from China and Reiki (RAY-key) from Japan, are all based on the understanding of the connection between the energy centers of the body, how they correlate to health and vitality, spiritual understanding, as well as emotional and mental powers.
What are Chakras?
Around our body is a rainbow-like, electromagnetic, subtle energy field that interacts with our physical body by flowing through spiraling energy centers inward and outward.
These spiritual energy centers are commonly named Chakras. Chakra is the Westernized term for the Sanskrit word ‘cakra,’ which means ‘wheel’ or ‘vortex’. Chakra work comes from traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine. They are nonphysical centers of spinning energy. Chakra is based on the idea that the energy of the body is centered through seven main points in the middle of the body that move in a circular pattern, creating the aura of the body.
The spiritual energy centers of the soul body are points of contact where the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the body come together. Each spiritual center is associated with an endocrine gland: Crown/Pituitary and Pineal, Brow/Pituitary and Pineal, Throat/Thyroid, Heart/Thymus, Solar Plexus/Islets of Langerhans located in the Pancreas, Sacral/Adrenals, and Root/Gonads.The chakras are swirling energy centers in the body that contain a certain type of energy. The three lower chakras are the root, sacral, and solar plexus chakras and are situated at our pelvis/genital area, abdomen/naval and the point just under our rib cage in the center of our body. Each of these is related to specific organs in our body, reflects the strength of the connection with our soul; as well as how well our mental, physical, and emotional needs are met.
Our navel chakra, also known as the sex chakra, controls our desires, sexual and otherwise, and our ability to create and procreate. In conjunction with the solar plexus chakra, the seat of our willpower and personal power, we can satisfy our desires and achieve our worldly goals.
The 4 higher chakras are the gateway to the mind and spirit. The four are the heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras. Moving the energy up from the 3 lower chakras through the solar plexus chakra can give the heart chakra a good massage that can open us up in terms of body, mind and spirit. It improves circulation and ‘listening to your heart’ and acting upon what you know to be right. This in turn can lead to better relationships with others and with the soul or spirit.
The throat chakra enables you to speak from the heart from a place of truth and authenticity. The throat chakra links the heart and third eye chakras, so it allows you to also speak your higher truth and wisdom as you tap into your intuition and spiritual aspects. The third eye chakra is depicted as being just above the bridge of your nose, between your two eyes.
Once we have a strong body and mind, it is easy to access our spirit in order to achieve our higher self. The crown chakra is the culmination of our spiritual accomplishments. It also allows us to connect with the universe and for the universe to send healing energies to us.
Each spiritual energy center corresponds to one of the seven notes on a musical scale: C, D, E, F, G, A, B and also corresponds to an ascending color on the light spectrum of which there are seven: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet (or white). The positive and negative “vibes” a person is outwardly exposed to in life can influence the inward functioning of the endocrine glands and their corresponding spiritual center. The dominant vibration – positive or negative – within a person’s body reflects which spiritual center is dominant within the person’s life.
The chakras are shaped like conical funnels with the narrow end rooted along the central nervous system of the physical body at intervals on the spine. The wide part passes through the dense body at the front moving outward to form the subtle bodies. The degree of openness of the chakra determines a person’s ability to receive and generate energy, known as chi (or prana).
These seven chakras have specific energetic functions and colors that develop and promote energy for a healthy life. One’s chakras can be or become balanced or unbalanced.
In Ayurvedic medicine, you can gain energy, youthfulness and transformative powers by learning how to activate and balance your chakras, and how to move your energy up and down your chakras via the central channel, the main energy channel in the body.
Chakras can be unbalanced by becoming blocked (underactive). When this happens our being as a whole is unbalanced. This condition often leads to illness and/or emotional blocks, and creates an unhealthy internal environment.

REIKI AND CHAKRA THERAPY AS ENERGY WORK
Reiki also uses the theory of the chakras in its healing. Reiki is a form of ‘hands on’ healing from Japan. However, it doesn’t always have to be by touch. The most skilled Reiki masters can even heal from a distance, or with just one look.
Reiki is an excellent healing technique for the chakras that are imbalanced, dysfunctional or even blocked due to problems of the body, mind and spirit. In Reiki, there are 14 meridians and 7 basic chakras. Working on each can boost their energy and get each back into balance.
Keeping your chakras balanced and functioning will prevent problems and illnesses.
Reiki involves hand placements targeting all major chakras to remove all negative energies and blockages that stand in the way of your normal energy flow like a rock in a stream. After these negative forms of energies are removed, your stream of energy is recovered and flows smoothly through your body. It is a natural and safe method of curing that can be used by anyone.
During healing, hands are placed on the affected areas that need to be cured. Reiki has been known to be one of the most effective methods of curing the chakras. Studies have shown that Chakra healing through Reiki offers multiple health benefits, including:
- Sinus problems
- Gastrointestinal difficulties
- Problems with metabolism
- Sexual problems
- Weight issues
- Back pain
Each of the 7 chakras has an energy and color associated with it. They are:
The Root Chakra-red: It is located around the area of your anus and its energy is the desire for safety, stability, food, water and shelter. It is the foundation of a good life.
The Sex Chakra-orange: This is the seat of procreative and reproductive energy. It is the seat of passion and desire.
The Solar Plexus Chakra-yellow: Think of solar, like the sun. The word plexus means network. It is in the middle of your body, at the area where your ribs separate. This is the seat of willpower, the energy that helps you drive towards success.
Heart Chakra-green: The heart chakra is in the center of your chest and is associated with love and compassion. A balanced chakra fosters good relationships and a happy life.
Throat Chakra-blue: Located at your throat, it controls communication, to say what you mean and be understood.
Third Eye-indigo (purplish blue): Located between your eyebrows, this is the center of your intuition. It helps you ‘see’ the world around you with greater clarity, including the spiritual world.
The Crown Chakra-purple and sometimes white: Located at the top of your head, it connects with all your chakras within, and with the universe outside.
If you’ve been feeling run down or out of kilter in certain areas of your life, Reiki might be the perfect way to even out your energy and balance your chakras for better health.
